By virtue of supplying drilling additives, Kai Equipment is able to take part in scientific research in the farthest corners of the world. The first stage of the Chukotka-2008 international expedition took place as part of the "Deep Drilling on Elgygytgyn Lake" project. The lake, located 500 kilometres to the northwest of the region's capital of Anadyr, is a crater filled with the cleanest water. It was formed 3.6 million years ago from a meteorite impact. Sediments built up on the lake's bottom represent a deposit of the most valuable information about past wildlife and climates.
In December 2008 there are plans to drill boreholes to a depth of 550 metres and extract rare rock specimen from the bottom of the lake. Core specimen bearing bottom sediments extracted using special drilling platforms will be sent to scientific organizations from countries participating in the project: US, Canada, Germany and Russia. Drill rigs working in cold-climate conditions were successfully tested.
Between February and May of 2009, two boreholes will be drilled in the lake. One of these boreholes will penetrate rocks formed at the time of the meteorite's impact. Interpretation of data will provide the key to uncover secrets of past climates and help control future climate changes on the planet.
